Exploring Nong Khiaw (NK) and Muang Ngoi (MN)

The trip departs and returns from Luang Prabang (LP)

Day 1: Monday, November 30

• Travel from LP to NK

• Private van (round-trip to from NK)

• Boat travel (round-trip)

• Visit to a Khmu ethnic village

• Visit to the bomb museum at Ban Manda

• Lunch in NK

• NK viewpoint for sunset viewing. Pha Daeng Peak hike: Begin hike no later than 4:00PM (bring flashlight); 2-3 hours round-trip hike, steep in sections. Around 50,000 KIP (less than $3USD)/pp. If you prefer not to hike, you'll have time to explore NK.

• Explore & dinner in NK

• Overnight stay at The River Huts

 

Day 2: Tuesday, December 1

• Optional Hike: If we want to get up very early, we can also hike to the top of Som Nang mountain in NK to see the sunrise. 20-40 minutes, easy hike. 50,000 KIP (less than $3USD)/pp. Begin hike at 5:00 AM (may want our driver to drop us off at trailhead, or we can walk for approx 20 minutes from our hotel). If you prefer, you can sleep in and relax at our hotel or explore NK.

• Breakfast after our hike in NK at The River Huts

• From NK, boat trip along the Ou River from NK to MN (round trip)

• Visit Kmu Village, easy hike through the rice fields to Mok Waterfall, and enjoy lunch at an organic farm. 

• Afterward, re-board the boat to travel to MN Kao Village.

• Check into our guest house.

• Hike up to the Phanoy Viewpoint for beautiful view. Roughly 45–60 minutes round-trip, easy hike. Begin hike at around 3:30 - 4PM (about 60 minutes before sunset). 5-minute walk from Say Lom Guest House.

• Dinner in MN

• Overnight stay at Say Lom Guest House

 

Day 3: Wednesday, December 2

• Early morning experience of the alms-giving ceremony at MN Village

• After breakfast, travel by boat upstream to explore Sop Chem village before returning to NK where we will have lunch and continue by boat to the dam.

• Then travel back to Luang Prabang via private van and return by the late afternoon

This is the general itinerary. If we have something special we all wish to do, or a stop along the drive, we can likely ask our guide.

 

FYI:

I plan to arrive in Luang Prabang on Saturday, November 28. I have booked my hotel in Luang Prabang (My Dream Boutique Resort) for a week and will store many of my bulkier belongings in my hotel room during the 2 nights I am up north (choosing to travel light with only a backpack). You are welcome to store your luggage in my room.
